BIOGRAPHY 2024
In the early part of 1989, five friends from McAllen, Texas who shared similar
music interests decided to start a band. Their set list consisted of Slayer,
Metallica, Dark Angel, Venom, Destruction, Kreator and Sepultura, to name a few.
Since many of their songs were from the first 3 Sepultura releases, they were
known in their area as Rest in Pain (the title of a Sepultura song from their
Schizophrenia album.) Later that year, Rest in Pain decided to start writing original
material and change their name to something more original, and in May of 1989,
Severance was born. The line-up at that time was Frank Sariñana- guitars, Ralph
Gutierrez- guitars, Oliver Gutierrez- bass, Lee Sariñana-vocals, and Jaime Perez-
drums. Their first release back in 1990 was a 3-song rehearsal demo that was
recorded in a friend’s living room titled, Procreation. From that moment until
today, the band continues their leaving their mark on the underground death
metal scene. Through the tape trading, global underground scene, Severance was
able to acquire a worldwide following that included many ‘zine interviews and
reviews, radio station airplay and label interest. There have been many different
incarnations of the band, but original drummer and lyricist, Jaime Perez, has
managed to sustain this entity in one form or another for over 3 decades.
Severance has shared the stage with many metal heavy weights such as Deicide,
Brujeria, Morbid Angel, Vader, Devastation (TX), Hexx, dead horse, Deeds of Flesh,
Thornspawn, Devourment, Exhumed, Aborted, Cattle Decapitation, Napalm
Death, Misery Index, Imprecation, and a long list of many more. Having played in
Europe, Mexico and across the United States, the band has continued to stay true
to their initial purpose of writing heavy music intended for those who lean more
towards the extreme side of music. They have several demos, full-length albums
and EPs in their discography, and they are still writing new material for future
releases and performing in shows and festivals around the world.
Currently one of the longest tenured and consistent death metal bands in the state of Texas,
it is not known when this fierce unit will come to conclude, but for now, there is still
much more Severance to unleash to the underground masses.
The band has just signed with DUM and are currently working on their new album,
entitled Abysmally Ascended,
to be released by Dark United Media on mid' 2024
